1719

Built in 1719 on a small artificial island located 2.8 miles west of the Kotlin Island, Tolbukhin is one of Russia’s oldest lighthouses. It was constructed at the behest of Peter I whose order was accompanied by a sketch of how the tower would look like.

Unveiled on August 7, 1719, the first version of the lighthouse was made of wood. In 1736, it was given the name of Kronstadt’s first commandant Fedot Tolobukhin.

The 29-meter-high stone tower would not be erected until September 1810.

Still active presently, the lighthouse is under state protection, and closed to public access.
