The monument is located in the park of the All-Russian Research Institute of Metrology named after D.I. Mendeleev. It portrays a scientist sitting in a chair with a book on his knees. Nearby, there is a panel with a periodic table of Mendeleev on the wall of the next building.

The history of this modest monument is interesting. In 1890, during the lifetime of D.I. Mendeleyev, a sculptor I.Ya. Ginzburg created his sculptural portrait. Later the portrait was cast in bronze, and Mendeleev bought it from the sculptor. On the basis of this portrait after the death of the scientist, Ginzburg on his own initiative produced a model of the monument and gave it as a gift to Academy of Sciences.

The monument was cast in bronze and was opened in 1932, and three years later on the wall of a neighboring building, a mosaic panel was installed "Periodic system of elements of D.I. Mendeleev " work of the artist V.A. Frolov.

There is an opinion that the scientist is shown smoking, with a cigarette in his hands. The monument of Mendeleev is popular among the students of Technological Institute. Twice a year, on the days of final exams and after enrollment, students polish Mendeleev's nose.
