Built by the Swedes in 1547-50 to defend the town, the elliptic, or rondel-shaped, Round Tower – 21 meters in diameter and with walls 3 to 4 meters thick at the base – is one of the two surviving artillery towers in the medieval Vyborg Fortress.

Originally used as an arsenal, the tower had lost its defensive role after Russia’s conquest of Vyborg, and was later used as a warehouse and even a prison. Nowadays, it houses a restaurant.
