What can you expect?
Here comes the New Year holidays! These days we would like to present you a new, not quite ordinary, excursion around Christmas St. Petersburg.
Together with an experienced guide, a connoisseur of the history of the city, Tatyana Gribaleva, we will travel into the depths of the centuries and learn how festive traditions originated in Russia, what Peter the Great brought to them, how they changed over the course of three centuries and how we celebrated the New Year and Christmas in St. Petersburg - Petrograd - Leningrad.

In program
Our route begins on the main square of St. Petersburg - Palace square, because it is here that the main Christmas tree of the Northern capital is traditionally installed. Where, if not here, to be imbued with the New Year's mood!
From here we will set off on a journey through the historic city center. You will learn many interesting, little-known facts:
- about the history of celebrating the New Year in pre-Petrine Russia;
- on the order of Peter I on the celebration of the New Year, on the change in chronology and on how they now began to celebrate it in the new capital;
- about the lover of masquerades Empress Elizabeth Petrovna;
- about the traditions of New Year and Christmas holidays under Catherine II;
- about how they prepared for Christmas and the New Year and how Petersburgers celebrated, depending on their position and level of wealth;
- about how the Christmas tree and Santa Claus became the symbols of the holiday (you will be surprised, but they were not always!);
- the first staging of the New Year's ballet The Nutcracker at the Mariinsky Theater;
- on the celebration of the New Year in the Soviet Union, including during the siege of Leningrad;
- and again about New Year's traditions at all times - folk festivities, riding in troikas, New Year's ice skating rinks and much, much more!

Экскурсия будет интересна не только туристам, но и коренным петербуржцам. Узнали много нового о традициях празднования Нового года и Рождества. Детям тоже очень понравилось, спасибо!
