Tokyo Institute of the Russian language for a number of years has organized photo exhibitions in Japan about the prisoners of the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. In 2018, a similar photo exhibition will be held in Russia for the first time. It will be held in the framework of the cross year of Russia and Japan and will be timed to the 110th anniversary of the return of the ashes of the dead Japanese prisoners of war to Japan. The Museum of Political History of Russia will feature 150 archival photographs depicting how Russians and Japanese prisoners of war were kept, what their daily lives were. In addition to photos, visitors will see musical instruments from the Museum of Music in the Sheremetev Palace. These tools were made by Japanese prisoners of war.

During the war, more than 70,000 Russian prisoners of war were in Japan. For the Japanese people, this was the first large-scale experience of contact with representatives of another nation. The exhibition will feature photographs from a unique album, “A Collection of Photographs of Russian Prisoners of War, collected and classified as an attachment to the report of the French consul Mr. de Lucy-Fossarya on the stay and maintenance of Russian prisoners of war in Japan during the campaign of 1904-1905” From this photo album, stored in the Russian State Archive of Cinema and Photo Documents, it is clear in what conditions the prisoners of war were kept, how their daily life proceeded.
