The exhibition hall of the Commandant's House opens an exhibition of Gatchina artists "Capital Gatchina", timed to coincide with the 225th anniversary of the city of Gatchina and its acquisition of the status of the capital of the Leningrad region in 2021.

Gatchina was first documented in 1500 in the Novgorod scribal book as the village of Hotchino, located on the territory of the Vodskaya pyatina of the Novgorod land.

In the 17th century, Gatchina lands belonged to Swedish subjects - the Finns - and were part of Ingermanland. During the Northern War, Peter I recaptured these lands from Sweden, and his sister Natalya Alekseevna became the first Russian owner of the Gatchina manor.

Throughout the 18th century, Gatchina changed several owners, one of the most famous was Count Grigory Orlov, who began the construction of the Gatchina Palace. After his death, Gatchina became the residence of the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich.

A few days after accession to the throne in 1796, Emperor Paul issued a decree granting the status of a city to Gatchina. Two years later, he approved the coat of arms of Gatchina, which depicts a symbol of state power - a two-headed eagle, an imperial monogram and a capital letter of the city.

The exhibition will feature over 100 creative works by 60 authors. Painting, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, porcelain, forging, patchwork and other arts and crafts.
