Aptekarsky Island: 20th Century

The exhibition is focused on Aptekarsky Island, one of St. Petersburg’s oldest residential locations.

Only pharmaceutical clerks were allowed to make their homes on the island that had been allocated for the cultivation of medical herb, according to a decree issued in 1714 by Peter the Great.

By the turn of the 20^th century, the island had become an increasingly fashionable suburban location, with new streets, bridges and stone houses being built at the time.
