The Museum of Art of St. Petersburg of the XX-XXI centuries opens the exhibition "Earthly Words" dedicated to the work of the outstanding Petersburg painter Vladimir Dolgopolov (1938-1999). The retrospective exhibition will present paintings, graphics and sculptures from the 1960s – 1990s, reflecting the artist's multifaceted talent.

Vladimir Dolgopolov is a painter, graphic artist, author of monumental works and ceramic plates, a member of the Group of Eight - Ladder creative association. Having received a professional art education at the department of monumental and decorative painting at the Leningrad Higher Art School named after V. I. Mukhina, Dolgopolov for a long time worked with monumental forms - mosaics, stained-glass windows and wall paintings, which was reflected in his easel works, which made up the exhibition "Earthly Words".

The works exhibited at the exhibition "Earthly Words" are distinguished by the expressiveness of the artistic language, the complexity and richness of colors. Vladimir Dolgopolov was a bright colorist who subtly felt the expression of colors, and it is precisely due to subtle coloristic constructions that the main emotional component of the image is maintained in his works, a certain mood and inner state of the characters is broadcast ("Turkish Woman", "Mourning"). Even in Dolgopolov's sculptural compositions, color remains an important element, emphasizing the volume and movement of plastic forms in space ("Female torso", "Figure with raised arms").

An important role in the formation of the individual creative manner of Vladimir Dolgopolov was played by the East, in particular, Central Asia, where the painter spent many years. This encounter with unknown nature turned out to be the strongest impulse: under the influence of oriental aesthetics, the artist created his main works related to two key themes in his work - oriental and biblical (“Girls from the village”, “Figures”, “Oriental motive”).

The exhibition "Earthly Words" at the Museum of Art of St. Petersburg of the XX-XXI centuries presents more than 40 works from the collection of the artist's family, as well as from the collection of the museum.
