Sofia Azarkhi. Sentimental upbringing

The St. Petersburg-based artist Sofia Azarkhi (born in 1951) works with graphic arts, panels, fabric collages, and installations. Through putting together fabric and paper or wood and iron, and utilizing old everyday household objects and children’s toys, she turns run-down things into pieces of art.

Azarkhi immerses the viewer into a world of theatricalized and often surrealistic stories with characters from fairytales and legends, outlandish animals and fishes, angels, warriors, or forces of nature.
