Maslenitsa in the Peter and Paul Fortress

The main city Pancake week festivities will traditionally be held in the very center of St. Petersburg - in the Peter and Paul Fortress. On the square near the Naryshkin bastion immediately after the midday shot ceremony.

A festive action will unfold in the fortress: guests of the fortress will be given performances by musical groups, various contests and folk entertainments, fascinating master classes and tasty treats. Folk-show group “Wheel”, Song and Dance Ensemble of the Western Military District, VIA “Kurazh FM”, ensemble “Cossack Dole” and artists of the Igragrad theater will take part in the festive concert.

Guests of the holiday will get acquainted with folk customs and rituals, learn how the townspeople and villagers used to celebrate Shrovetide. The culmination of the holiday will be the burning of three-meter stuffed Shrovetide. In the northern regions of Russia, it was traditionally made of straw, it was erected on a pole with a crosshair (hands), it was dressed in old clothes in patches. This year, the effigy of Winter was created under the strict guidance of ethnographer specialists in order to maximally convey the atmosphere of Shrovetide festivities of ancient times.
