The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an active Catholic church. The cathedral has the shape of a Latin cross. From the side of the street it is closed by the building, which is occupied by the only Catholic seminary in Russia "Mary - Queen of the Apostles". The temple building can be viewed from the side of the garden of the G.R. Derzhavina (formerly Polish Garden).

In 1873–1926 the cathedral had the status of a cathedral and was the residence of Metropolitan Mogilevsky, head of the Catholic Church on the territory of the Russian Empire (the residence of the head of the Catholic Church in the Russian Empire in 1849 was moved from Mogilev to St. Petersburg, but the archdiocese retained the name "Mogilyovskaya") .

The temple was erected in 1870-1873 according to the project of the architect V. I. Sobolshchikov. After his death, construction ended under the direction of E.S. Vorotilova. On April 12, 1873, the cathedral was consecrated by Archbishop Anthony Fialkovsky.

In 1896–1897 the cathedral was rebuilt and expanded, side aisles were attached to it, and side altars were decorated with bronze statues. On December 23, 1897, the rebuilt cathedral was re-consecrated.

In 1900, a Catholic seminary was transferred to the building of the archdiocesan house located next to the cathedral. The residence of the archbishop moved to nearby house 118 on the Fontanka embankment - the former Derzhavin manor.

The seminary was closed in 1918, the cathedral in 1930. After World War II, the church building, which was damaged by bombs, was redone for the needs of the design bureau.

The restoration of the normal activities of the Catholic Church in Russia began in the early 1990s. In 1994, the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was re-registered. In September 1995, the church building was returned to the Church, in the same year the seminary building was also returned, to which the Higher Catholic Seminary “Mary the Queen of the Apostles” moved from Moscow.

After a large-scale restoration, the church was opened for worship on February 16, 1997, and on May 24, 1998, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated for the third time.

The temple regularly hosts concerts of sacred music.
