The station of the 5th (Frunzensko-Primorsky, Violet) line was opened on September 15, 1997 as part of the Sadovaya - Chkalovskaya section. Until March 7, 2009, it was operated as part of the Right-Bank ("Orange") line, and switched to "Violet" after entering the section "Dostoevskaya" - "Spasskaya".

The station got its name from the avenue of the same name, which, in turn, was named after the famous Soviet pilot Valery Chkalov. The aviation theme is also devoted to the design of the station.

The station pavilion stands on a stepped basement. Right on the steps, facing the intersection, a bust of Chkalov by sculptor Sveshnikov was installed. The lobby has access to Ropshinskaya Street, which is currently not in use, and above the escalator passage there is a large balcony connecting the office premises.

The underground hall was designed by architects V.S. Volonsevich and A.S. Konstantinova. At the end of the hall is a stained glass window depicting a man-plane. The drawing on the landing platform resembles the markings on the airfield, and the metal lights above the tracks are stylized as structural elements of the ANT-6 aircraft. Lamps on the escalator gallery are made in the form of propellers.
