The history of the library has more than a hundred years. Created in 1918 amid the civil war, devastation and uncertainty, it became a place that united book lovers. The main book fund consisted of books from the reading room named after Leo Tolstoy, libraries in the name of N.V. Gogol and V.K. Koltsov, as well as private collections of Butkovsky, Grigoryev and Urusov. Some of the books of this first collection have survived to this day. In 1921, the library was named after the Russian writer and thinker Alexander Ivanovich Herzen.

Today the library has become one of the brightest cultural centers in the Central District of St. Petersburg. It takes pride in the city’s largest collection of fantasy and fiction literature. For readers, lectures and seminars, workshops, concerts and performances, meetings with popular writers, presentations of book novelties, film lectures, exhibitions of photographs, paintings and applied art, as well as much more, are organized.
