Built as long ago as in the 14th century, the square had long been the place to host the town’s public assemblies and meetings.

In the 1630-40’s, the Swedish engineer Andres Torstensson significantly changed its look.  Within his project, the town hall itself was built, and wooden buildings on the square were replaced with stone ones that have survived until now.

In 1710, Vyborg was conquered by Peter the Great. By the 19th century, the town’s walls and towers had been demolished. In the 1870s, the statues Industry and Maritime Trade were installed in the place where the town gates had once been located.

In the late 19th century, the town hall building had been reconstructed, and converted into a history/ethnography museum whose collection was unfortunately lost during the Soviet-Finnish wars in 1939-44.

Seriously damaged, buildings on the square were completely renovated in the post-WWII years.
