Art Nouveau in Sementsy

Depicting a general image of St. Petersburg’s modernist architecture, the exhibition focuses on masterpieces built by Alexander Baranovsky, Boris Girshovich, Dmitry Kryzhanovsky, Alexei Bubyr and other prominent Art Nouveau architects in the city’s historic neighborhood Sementsy.

After coming to Russia at the turn of the 20th century, Art Nouveaux gained special popularity in St. Petersburg.

Due to the advances made during the Industrial Revolution, the design and construction of Art Nouveaux buildings embraced state-of-the-art technologies to combine aesthetic decorativeness and comfortability at affordable costs.

The style was not exclusively applied to the exterior of the buildings, but extended to the interior decoration and furnishings as well.

In addition to 3D installations of modernist architectural elements, the exhibition features samples of Art Nouveaux book design, applied arts, tableware, packaging, and other items from everyday life of that time.
