The exhibition features works by Soviet photography classics that were first displayed in 1937 when Russia was marking the 100th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin, one of its greatest poets.
Back in the 1930s, every dimension in Soviet social life was subject to state control. Arts including photography were expected to produce propaganda accessible to every citizen. In case of Pushkin, the basic propagandistic message was to stress the poet’s ‘Sovietness.’
The collection at the exhibition consists of 21 photo series shot in Moscow, Leningrad, the Crimea, the Caucasus, Mikhailovskoe, and Boldino.
